Federal Government Positions Nigeria as Emerging Hub for Sustainable Aviation Fuel, Strengthens Partnership with European Aviation Safety Agency
The Federal Government has reaffirmed Nigeria’s ambition to become a leading hub for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in Africa, leveraging Innovation, Science and Technology (IST) to drive growth in the aviation sector and support the global energy transition, this was stated by the Honorable Minister who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, FMIST, Mr. Philip Ndiomu Ebiogeh, during a courtesy visit by a delegation from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) in Abuja.
He underscored that the adoption of SAF and emerging technologies, positions Nigeria as a key player in Africa’s green transition, with the potential to significantly reduce aviation carbon emissions while enhancing national energy security.
The Minister noted that harnessing Nigeria’s vast natural resources and advancing local feedstock development, will not only align the aviation sector with global standards but also stimulate domestic economic growth.
He further emphasized the Ministry’s mandate to drive scientific advancement and innovation, particularly through the commercialization of research outputs to meet national needs and deliver tangible economic value.
Highlighting the importance of partnerships, he stated that collaboration with global institutions like EASA and national regulators such as NCAA is critical for knowledge exchange, capacity building and strengthening regulatory frameworks within the aviation ecosystem.
Discussions during the visit focused on key areas including sustainable aviation fuel development, aviation safety systems, research and development, and digital transformation, with the Ministry reaffirming its commitment to providing policy support for industry growth.
Earlier, a Senior Consultant for EASA, Damiana Serafina, noted that the visit aims to strengthen cooperation with Nigeria in developing a viable SAF industry through strategic planning, investment frameworks and institutional support.
